... Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a mixture of linoleic acid isomers with conjugated double bonds that has been studied intensively. CLA cannot be produced by the human body, but it can be obtained through foods such as whole milk, butter, beef, and lamb. CLA is currently sold commercially as dietary supplements for weight and fat loss. CLA may be one of the most potent antioxidant substances in our diet. In animal studies, as little as one half of one percent CLA in the diet showed promising health benefits.
A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study in humans, published in the December 2000 issue of the Journal of Nutrition found that CLA reduces fat and preserves muscle tissue. An average reduction of six pounds of body fat was found in the group that took CLA, compared to a placebo group. (
Conjugated Linoleic Acid Reduces Body Fat Mass in Overweight & Obese Humans)
An October 2002 study at the NIH observed that the maximum reduction in body fat mass was achieved with a 3.4 g daily dose. CLA supplementation has, however, been shown to increase C-reactive protein levels and to induce oxidative stress. The oxidative stress seems closely related to induced insulin resistance, suggesting a link between the fatty acid-induced lipid peroxidation seen in the study and insulin resistance.
The latest update [Sep 2007] on CLA is that mixed isomer CLA supplementation, positively alters fat oxidation and energy expenditure during sleep.

It is tempting to believe the studies that show a positive change, however I believe such a potentially harmful supplementation must be put to more rigorous trials before it can be recommended for the general obese population.
