To gain this experience and knowledge, involves years of learning a core course of study that covers all aspects of disease and treatment, as well as hard work, internships and examinations to qualify as a practicing dietitian.
A Nutritionist works in close association with the physician, physiologist, biochemist, people who deal with exercise science, pharmacists and is responsible for the health and welfare of the patient. Lately, this systematic program has been abused due to the lack of strict guidelines and enforcement of guidelines for qualifying.
In developing countries such as India, nutrition training has now become any and everybody’s forte. Homemakers, gym instructors, coaches, yoga teachers take up short term certificate or diploma courses in nutrition and dietetics available at a hefty price. Courses are available online, at gyms, health clubs, weight loss clinics, finishing schools and private institutions. An individual can now become a certified nutritionist in a jiffy, a month or a semester. Though short term courses appear to be attractive the benefits could be short lived. Unlike traditional degree courses these are restrictive and do not provide in depth training and lack practical value. They simply boil down to quackery.
