Breakfast - Start your day light & right" Waking up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee, tea or to the tantalizing aroma of fresh food being cooked is the best way to break one's nightly fast. Have you ever wondered why "breakfast" is called just that? The word `breakfast' literally means to break your fast, after a necessary gap of 10 -12 hours without a sizeable meal!

Night time gives your body the much needed rest and allows you to begin a new day afresh, ready to prepare food that will satisfy your hunger and ensure your body gets the nutrition it needs to help you stay alert, energetic and without desperate cravings for food. The bottom line is that the body needs nutrition at this point in the morning to get the engine working efficiently. The key is learning to eat a balance of light yet right food items to maximize the benefits.

What's on your platter?
Traditional Indian breakfast is a combination of complex carbs and proteins that contain fibre, minerals and vitamins that give a steady stream of energy. The essence of a good breakfast is its nutritional contribution to your body's needs. Must eat items are: complex grains like oats or whole wheat which are light and slow and energy releasing carbohydrates. These gradually release energy over 3 - 4 hrs due to their fibre content.

They also contribute vitamins B & E, vital to functioning of the digestive, nervous and immune systems. Calcium, phosphorous and magnesium are key nutrients that help build strong bones, accompanied by exercise. When we skip breakfast either to lose weight or due to lack of time, we set ourselves up for all that we try to avoid, or OAA: an acronym for - obesity, acidity and anaemia. Our body craves satiety, and we instead binge on junk, snacks, and multiple cups of sugar-loaded coffee to feed the hunger pangs. It's never too late to get smart and start the day with a power packed breakfast. You could cover your needs by eating one whole-wheat toast and a banana with a glass of juice or low-fat milk and bingo!! You've started your day right. Rise and shine; breakfast is served!

Brainpower comes from the following foods:

  • Pongal/ idli/ dosa with coriander/ mint chutney
  • Rotis with a small serving of a cooked vegetable
  • Stuffed whole-wheat parathas with yogurt
  • Mixed vegetable upma
  • Sandwiches with boiled egg and apple salad on whole wheat bread
  • Oats porridge or cereals with milk, along with fresh and dried fruits
  • (Down these with a few glasses of thirst quenching water)

Overall benefits:

  • Improves overall health and well-being
  • Better concentration and academic performance
  • Less fatigue and sleepiness mid-morning
  • Reduces hyperactivity, irritability, and anxiety
  • Reduces the risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes

Arpana Shashidhar Morning is a terrible rush with my 2 kids aged 5 and 8 having to leave at 6.30 am and my hubby and me at 7.30am. However much I coax my kids to get up early to go to school, they wake up only at 6.00am so there is not time for them to eat breakfast.I am very perturbed about this.

Kanika Jain Hi Aparna,

Thanks for your query. This is not just your story but many families are reeling under same situation. You may try out few things like

a) Give some finger food or rolled food in morning like sandwich, stuffed paranthas or rolled roti with veggie which they can easily have on their way to school.

b) If they are not able to drink milk in morning because of hurry then you may try out other milk preparations like cottage cheese and can give them milk when they are back from school.

c) You can give them some fruit like apple ,guava, orange, peach etc. along with their packed lunch.

Thanks and regards,

Poonam Vaswani Hello Aparna,
You are not alone here. This is a dilema faced by most parents. It is very difficult to coax children into eating a good breakfast so early in the morning. You should make sure that they at least drink a glass of milk before leaving. Hand over 8-10 nuts which they can nibble on, on their way to school. Pack a fruit for the mini break. This will take care of their nutrient requirement and give them the needed energy.

Manjula S Arpana,
Thats awful - I am a school teacher - This is what I used to do for my kids - now they are much older.Have you considered letting them have even jam and toast with half a banana and glass of milk.
or,

If you have a blender blend 1.5 glasses of skim milk with 1.5 cups of frozen or fresh fruit such as strawberries, or peaches, or mango. Hand each child and yourself a glass of this great tasting blend.
If you cant get frozen fruit - freeze your own in advance - I freeze fruits when they are in season. They are more reasonably priced during season and they are handy for morning or evening snacks.
Try it.
Actually, even basic cereal and milk is good.
But make them eat before they go to school, as it definitely affects their concentration levels.

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy Dear Arpana,

We do understand your concern and anxiety. It is too early for the kids to leave home, but it is also necessary to find an amicable solution to this problem as kids/adults should not skip breakfast, the most essential meal of the day.

(1) Make your kids go to bed early, so that they are up by 5.00 am. It is a practice which will set in a few days.

(2) Let the dinner be early and light so that they are hungry when they wake up. This means no junk, sugary, high on fat foods after 4.00 pm in the evening.

(3) Get them to play at least an hour of outdoor games in the evening so that it helps in better sleep quality

(4)Make easy, quick, interesting and variety breakfast items (you can find recipes on our website), so the kids are tempted to eat them and are looking forward for a new thing every morning.

Hope these suggestions help, please feel free to contact us for any nutrition related query.
