I am most certainly in agreement with most of your comments to my posting on food based dietary guidelines for India.
In
a country that has long prided itself in its heritage, culture and
healthful diet, India is now seeing the first casualties of
globalization in the form of overweight, obesity and related health
disorders.
As a consequence, a recent World Health
Organization (WHO) report indicated that weight related illnesses will
cost Indian businesses $B 50 annually over the next seven years,
something that India just cannot afford at this time of worldwide
economic malaise.
Furthermore, India now has the dubious
distinction of having the lowest healthy longevity in the world with
individuals in their early thirties showing evidence of some health
related problem.
As the respected professionals at NIN and
officials at the Health Ministry gear up to develop new food based
dietary guidelines for India's 1.1 billion people, we at NutritionVista
would implore that the guidelines be highly relevant to the major
public health issues at stake such as diabetes, heart disease and
malnutrition (over and under). Testing and communicating the guidelines
followed by proper monitoring have been major impediments to success in
the past; however, one does not have to look too far. We can take the
lessons learned by countries such as Thailand, Philippines and Chile as
they successfully rolled out their new and improved guidelines.
The
true challenge always will be that we as a nation need to have the proper
processes in place to disseminate the information through out the
country. A new reliable partner in the form of a leading information
technology (IT) company could help solve some of the problems faced in
the past along with a more robust and forceful political commitment.
