Many natural health proponents and alternative medicine experts believe that toxic build up in the body should be periodically flushed out to attain good health. Detox diets are considered to be a health savior for those with bizarre lifestyles and habits. It is akin to 'binge and purge'- build the toxins and throw them out with detox diets.
These diets aim at cleansing the system or specific organs. The process involves a period of fasting followed by a diet of raw fruits, juices, vegetables, fluids, herbs and supplements. A day's fast can be usually tolerated and is not fatal. But when the diet lasts over a week, doctor's approval and supervision is warranted. The diets used in the process are diverse from the usual diets and individuals are likely to respond differently. Some may adapt instantly while others may take time.
"National Centre for Alternative and Complementary Medicine (NCACM), a division of the National Institute of Health (NIH) cautions that the herbs sometimes used in detox diets can have powerful effects on the body and may interact with drugs. Therefore, check with a health care provider before beginning this or any other detox regime to rule out underlying health issues or complications".
