A NEJM article based on recent studies on obesity and weight loss programs, brings on a healthy dose of reality and affirms sensible weight loss.**

Let us begin by noting that the ideal weight loss rate can vary between 1-2 kilos per week. At this rate your body `learns' to lose the extra fat and not the essential muscle tissues or water. If the rate is higher, then it is `rapid', which is both unhealthy as well as dangerous.

So, what does it take to lose weight healthily - the popular `low-carb' diet or the conventional `low-fat' diet? The answer is, it doesn't matter as long as a calorie deficit is created, says the largest-ever controlled study of weight loss methods, published today in The New England Journal of Medicine. More than 800 overweight adults participated in this study.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar A new study published in AJCN (January) showed that in as far as weight reduction was concerned it is only the Calories that count, not where they come from.
The study was supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the General Clinical Research Center, NIH to determine whether energy-reduced diets that emphasize fat, protein, or carbohydrate showed different results in the reduction of total, visceral, or hepatic fat or preserve lean mass.
They found that all participants lost more fat than lean mass, irrespective of the diet consumed with no differences in changes in body composition, abdominal fat, or hepatic fat between assigned macro-nutrient amounts.

2.Serve yourself 20% less
3.Use taller glasses(for drinks which give calories)
4.Apart from carbs also have high protein for breakfast.
5.Begin the meal with soups.
6.Snack on salads if hungry between meals.

8.Do not eat of a package.

Vijayalakshmi The advantage of tying up with a good weight loss website like NV for example is you can lose weight with a game plan. You have access to a daily diet and exercise log so immediate output of calories in & calories out ....new recipes to avoid monotony.... help at hand and most important an encouraging and motivating dietitian who will work one on one with you
