Data reveals that the average American adult consumes 3,400 milligrams of sodium a day, 1100mg too many! A recent study that examined the potassium intake across 21 countries including the US revealed people consumed only about 1.7 to 3.7 grams of potassium daily, nearly 2-3 grams a day less then the body needs. Sodium consumption was an average of 5 grams per day. Some even consumed 9 to 12 grams daily.
All this has resulted in a double whammy - excessive consumption of sodium with inadequate potassium intake. And it is impacting our overall health.
According to CDC epidemiological researcher Elena V. Kuklina, MD, PhD. Americans who eat a diet high in sodium and low in potassium have a 50% increased risk of death from any cause and about about twice the risk of death from heart disease.
