Symptoms of Insulin Resistance (IR)
People may have IR for several years without noticing anything. However, when it becomes severe the person develops a condition called acanthosis nigricans, characteristically with dark patches on the skin especially back of the neck or as a dark ring around the neck. The other likely sites are elbows, knees, knuckles, and armpits.

Pre-diabetes
When blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not as much as to be categorized as diabetes, it is referred to as pre-diabetes. It is also referred to as impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). It naturally follows that people with pre-diabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Since in type 2 diabetes there may be enough insulin but cells dos not respond properly to insulin, it is also called as NIDDM (non insulin dependent diabetes)

Are women who have Insulin Resistance, also prone to PCOS? My height is 165 cms and weight is 68 kgs. I have been prescribed metformin and it looks like its not helping me. I exercise regularly and have lost about 10 kgs in a year, eat fairly healthy. Please advise.

Dear Hemavathy ,
Hyperinsulinemia is a fundamental disturbance in many women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Some women with this syndrome have 'metabolic PCOS' ,a pre-diabetic state.There is a lot of evidence that high levels of insulin contribute to increased production of androgen, which worsens the symptoms of PCOS.
So I suggest you go to a gyn as well as a diabetologsit and continue exercising as you can see its helping you.It would help you immensly if you enroll with us as we can help you handle it better with a proper diet.www.nutritionvista.com

Like Diabetes can even thin people get metabolic syndrom eor insulin resistance? My husbands family has a history of Diabetes but he is thin, and exercises on & off.

Yes, thin people can also get IR and metabolic syndrome. It's good that your husband exercises regularly. But, since he has a family history, he must get an annual health check up to ensure that all his parameters are within normal range.

Insulin resistance precedes the development of type 2 diabetes and a healthy diet and regular exercise can prevent it.

2 important studies that looked at the prevention of type 2 diabetes, one in Finland and the other in US (DPP study), showed that patients who could not control their blood glucose levels i.e they had insulin resistance, reduced the development of diabetes by 58% or so when they made positive changes in diet and exercise.

Hello Jagmohan,
Studies have revealed that lifestyle modifications, exercise and loss of weight can help in reversal of Insulin Resistanc. Exercising helps by making muscles less resistant to insulin. These modifications also help in warding off the development of type 2 diabetesbecause all IR patients are prone to it.
