The only worry is will people increase their unhealthy eating along with their statin sprinkles as the guilt and fear lessens. The analogy to road safety would be befitting. A big metal spike sticking out from the front of the steering wheel aimed at the driver would have him drive the car more carefully that if his car had air bags The more safety features they have in the car the more dangerously drivers will drive. On the flip side are they worried at all even without the statin as most people binge till they are more than full, in which case the current study would positively make sense.
There is naturally mixed reactions between the many cardiologists themselves. Some think its dry humour, whereas others think it’s a callous `easy fix’. Bad eating habits and life style is a chronic disease and more addictive than the drugs to counter high cholesterol levels.
Dr Dariush Mozaffarian (Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA) had a very logical reasoning against use of statins in this fashion. He was categorical in that unhealthy dietary habits affect the cardiovascular system in multiple ways, including insulin resistance, endothelial function, and other cholesterol particles not diet alone. Again Diet also causes arrhythmic risks, satiety and weight gain, cancer, diabetes and many other such problems. So by blocking two of the many pathways- LDL cholesterol and partially inflammation, it in no way ensures that all the ill effects of diet are taken care off. Dr Mozaffarian felt that an environmental change took place for healthier eating even drug therapy would not be in the basic correction category. He felt if a person needed a statin then he should be prescribed a statin, till recovery while simultaneously gaining from a healthy diet. There should be no doubt person should not get the feel that since he is on statin he need not worry too much about eating healthy.
