Risk factors
- Aging – people over the age of 40 years are more prone to the disease
- Inadequate fiber in the diet has been associated with the disease.
- Lack of exercise
- Obesity
- Smoking
In a recent study, researchers studied the associations of vegetarianism and the intake of dietary fiber (i.e. non-starch polysaccharides) with the risk of diverticular disease using information from hospital admission data and death certificates for England and Scotland in men and women taking part in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Oxford.
Results were published in the British Medical Journal on 19th July 2011.
