Healthy skin & hairHair
Each strand of hair contains water 12-15% of water, 3% lipids, minerals and melanin (the natural colour of the hair). Keratin (protein) is its main constituent and is formed by the combination of 18 amino acids.

Each strand of hair has a life cycle. It grows, falls and then regrows. But this cycle of regrowth slows down during the aging process and other stresses.

Essential tips for healthy hair

  • Know your hair type - hair usually falls into one of four categories: normal, oily, dry and combination. If you know your hair type you will be able to choose products and treatments which are best suited to your hair type.
  • Healthy skin & hairHair care routine - it’s an absolute must to wash your hair frequently with a good shampoo followed by a suitable conditioner. Wet hair should be allowed to dry naturally. Overuse of heating machines should be avoided to prevent damage to hair.
  • Protect your hair - Hair should be protected from the harsh rays of the mid afternoon sun. Massaging the hair with a good oil will not only nourish and condition the hair but also help in improving blood circulation to the scalp. Tight hairstyles should be avoided to prevent breakages.
  • Nourishing diet - a diet which has excellent quality protein, adequate omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E, B complex vitamins and minerals like, zinc, selenium and calcium nourish the hair making it strong, healthy and lustrous.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear ladies according to the American Academy of Dermatology as a rule most of us lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair each day. On `hair washed' days one may lose around 250 strands(But we should not avoid washing our hair to retain hair as it will for one eventually fall and far another unhygienic hair/scalp can cause more damage)
If one has been careful with diet and life style and yet appear to lose a lot of hair it could be due to predetermined genetic factors, family history, and the overall aging process or hormone problems.
Another factor to consider is self-inflicted damage- hairstyles like cornrows or too-tight braids can cause hair loss called traction alopecia.
Many of us manipulate our hair including brushing too much and towel drying aggressively when the hair is wet or things like-dyes, chemical treatments, bad brushes, blow dryers, and flat irons all which result in damage and breakage.
If your hair fall continues for a long time with no change in cycle please consult your dermatologist.
I hope we have been of some help to all of you.

Manjula Bhatnagar Hi,
My hair has recently been falling and it has become thinner also - could it be because I am going through menopause. I have tried homeopathy and alsoeat more fruits and vegetables. What other foods can I eat that will perhaps also help control hotflashes. Thanks
