Food and food components - To reduce.
- Sodium: To consume <2300 mg from the current 3400 mg and further to <1500mg for individuals age 51 and older, any age for Afro Americans and those who have hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease.
- Saturated fat < 10% of total calories, Cholesterol < 300mg /day.
- Trans fats, especially those from partially hydrogenated oils and solid fats.
- Sugar. Reduce intake of sweetened beverages.
- Refined grains and cereals.
- Alcohol. Consumption should be limited to one drink / day for women and 2 drinks per day for men. An Alcohol drink is defined as 12 fluid ounces of beer, 5 fluid ounces of wine, 1.5 fluid ounces whisky, 1 drink contain 0 .6 fluid ounces of alcohol.
To reduce sodium and fat in diet
- Read nutrition labels and make wise decisions
- Consume fresh foods and more of home made foods
- Request low salt and low fat in dishes while ordering food in restaurants
