Recommendations for specific population groups
For women who want to become pregnant:-
- Choose foods like livers of animals etc rich in heme iron. Additionally include Vitamin C rich foods, as they facilitate iron absorption, especially if they are plant sources.
- Eat a variety of folate rich foods and in addition to that take, a supplement of around 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid per day. This can be synthetic folic acid foods such as fortified foods and/or supplements.
For Women who are pregnant or are breastfeeding:-
- Eat around 8-12 ounces from a variety of sea food /week. Avoid fish with high mercury content such as - tile fish, shark, swordfish, and king mackerel and restrict white (albacore) tuna to 6 ounces per week. Pregnant women should take iron supplements recommended by their obstetrician or other any health care provider.
For individuals 50 yrs of age and over
- As most people have a deficiency of potassium, dietary fiber, calcium, and vitamin D, include plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk & milk products to provide these nutrients
- Consume Vitamin B12 fortified foods such as fortified cereals, or dietary supplements.
Building healthy eating Patterns
- Select an eating pattern that meets nutrient needs over time, at every calorie level.
- Account for calories & other nutrients from all foods and beverages consumed and assess how they fit within a total healthy eating pattern.
- Follow food safety recommendations when preparing and eating foods to reduce the risk of food borne illnesses.
